"We Speak English"

My Partner and I are finding it difficult to understand how advertising that our cleaning company “Cecille’s Residential Services” speaks English is controversial. We live in the United States of America, yet most housekeeping companies send non-English speaking workers to their client’s homes. Needless to say the English speaking clients were totally frustrated with the lack of communication from their non-English speaking help.

Somehow, if we advertise “We Speak English” we are deemed unfair, discriminating, or politically incorrect in some esoteric manner I have yet to conceive. This is especially puzzling since my business partner emigrated from the Philippines and English is her second language. While our clients rave about the clear communication they receive, many non-English speaking “residents” that take personal offense to our advertising slogan. One disgruntled “resident” went so far as to write obscenities on one of our vehicles.

As we drive down the road we either get the thumbs up or another finger which I will decline to name by position. With hundreds of businesses proudly touting “se habla Espanol”, I see no reason why one business cannot say “We Speak English”. I find it ironic that in the United States of America we must advertise that we speak English because most residents automatically assume housekeepers we do not.
